In process still - testing a hand painted UVW for a board.  for speed/efficiency, determination was to create most materials using 3ds Max materials and maps, and adjust values (note cloned texture on the crate close-up, above)  The wood textures on the cannon carriage were UVW unwraps, painted in Photoshop
